Colchester Garrison is a major garrison located in Colchester, Essex. It has been an important military base since the Roman era and played a huge role in the Napoleonic wars. It is now the home to the British Army’s 16th Air Assault Brigade. The garrison has been redeveloped and now has one central camp called Merville Barracks.
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation has delivered 2 new ‘pay as you dine’ restaurants at Merville Barracks. In addition to the restaurants, a new coffee shop known as the ‘Eagles Rock Café’ has opened at the community centre.
The new dining facilities have extended opening hours and offer a more sociable environment to the troops and their families.
299 Lighting have supplied feature lighting for the cafeteria and the two restaurants. The brief was to supply LED feature lighting, which would add a visual interest to the space. The consultant chose the suspended Basic P1, a large 900mm luminaire with a soft opal diffuser. It provides direct and indirect illumination and is dimmable. All these features make the Basic P1 an ideal fitting for modern restaurants and canteens.
For the cafeteria, the Wax-P1 was specified. With 490mm diameter, this smaller size circular pendant is side-lit and suitable for decorative purposes. This project had a quick turnaround and was delivered on time for the official opening on the 4th September 2014.
