Originally a job centre, bookshop and galleries, but replaced in 1998 by a new set of developments, the building received its new name. Housing some key commercial tenants, and boasting the best location in the city, the Capital Tower is the tallest office building in Cardiff, offering impressive views of the city.
Capital Tower is part of the portfolio of over 165 properties of Topland Group, one of Europe’s largest privately owned international investment groups. The building is undergoing a multi –million-pound refurbishment, offering high-quality office accommodation over 24 floors.
In 2015, we were approached by the office workspace and fit-out specialist, Paramount Interiors, who worked on the refurbishment of the 8th and 9th floor. The key brief was to revamp the tired looking corridors and circulation areas. The design was calling for minimalist looking luminaires, that had to be integrated into the existing ceilings. The recessed trimless luminaire Lopen was used to create a continuous line of light. The Lopen not only boasts outstanding efficiency and a contemporary design, but structural integration is the key design feature for the Lopen recessed.
Our team supported the design team at Paramount with technical knowledge and lighting calculations.
The second stage of the project was the refurbishment of the ground floor, including the reception area, a new coffee shop and a variety of meeting spaces that took place towards the end of 2016. Having previously undertaken the first stage of the refurbishment, Paramount Interiors have been in the driving seat for the second stage of the fit out again.
The design brief was to create a clean looking, bright and inviting reception area with a minimalist look. Recessed linear lighting in the trimless version were used to create crisp lines of light. The lines vary in length between 3.6m to 9 m. The Lopen is available in 7 standard sizes allowing to create a specific length of the line. If the design calls for even more accurate size, a bespoke lighting scheme could be achieved thanks to the LED circuit board being only 280 mm.
The linear lighting was also used in the coffee shop, seamlessly blending into the white ceilings and creating a strong visual feature at the same time. For the small informal meeting rooms, the suspended luminaires, Rydal were used in anodised finish.
The biggest challenge of this project was the complexity of the fit out and a strict time schedule, as the reception area had to remain operational at all times. The project was relatively fast paced with the whole refurbishment delivered to the client within 18 weeks.
The result is a contemporary looking reception area with a clean look and efficiency to help the occupiers keep their running costs in check. The lighting was supplied on time to the satisfaction of the client.
