THE FOCUS IS ENTIRELY ON THE DESIGN PROCESS

DIALux EVO 8.0 UPDATE

With about 700,000 users all over the world, DIALux is the leading lighting design software allowing complex visualisations with great results. In the first version of DIALux evo, the focus was entirely placed on developing functions for highly complex designs. The latest version of the software is now set to focus on improving the efficiency of the designers using the software on a daily basis.

The new DIALux evo 8.0 update was launched at the Light+Building show in Frankfurt in March this year. Understandably, the DIALux stand was buzzing with excitement. After having to queue patiently in the crowd, we finally got the yellow card with the scratch code in our hands!

 The code was immediately sent to the office and our lighting designers were amongst the first to download the new update of the software.

So, what is in the 'box'?

WE ASKED OUR HEAD DESIGNER ELMAN LEWIS TO TELL US ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE

DESIGNING WITH THE IMAGE FILES.

We are often challenged with designing individual room(s) or entire buildings. Professional specifiers like to work with AutoCAD files and DIALux can handle these superbly. Some clients however don't always have the DWG files handy. But with the DIALux update it is now possible to use image files. Anything from a quick hand sketch to Google Map snippets can now be imported to speed up the workflow and making our life easier. We can work with .jpg | bmp | png with the addition of orientating and scaling the drawing. There is also an option of using a cut-out from a PDF file, which is a step in the right direction, but could result in loosing resolution. The option of importing a PDF file is what we really need!

NEW FUNCTIONS FOR ROOM DESIGN.

Another area where workflow has been improved on is the ability for designers to seamlessly create exterior and interior wall automatically, just by adjusting the wall thickness. The designer does not have to create exterior contours anymore if they are doing a quick calculation. It is now possible to create a room within a room which saves using the cut-out tool to merge two spaces together. Measuring tools have been enhanced to include angles, and all apertures now feature lengths as standard. DIALux evo 8.0 also makes it easier to dimension objects such as windows and skylights. Sadly, there is also no ability for the import to be in the axis Z, which would really help designers who are working on side elevations.

PRODUCT.

Luminaire properties have also been enhanced to include LOR (light output ratio) and luminous efficacy (Lm/W). This will allow designers to quickly assess fittings performance to generate a report.

The biggest part of the update is in the backend of the software, calculation time has been improved substantially reducing waiting time, and importing IFC has also benefited from the update. The import process is still very temperamental and often throws tantrums during the import stage.

Here is my wishlist for the features in the coming update:

          * Emergency calculations

          * Cloud-based calculations (https://www.bloomunit.com/en/)

          * BIM/IFC export

          * Revit DIAL Plugin

          * Import files to Z-axis

          * Updated Objects Catalogue

          * Built-in LDT editor

          * Raytracer with Daylight

          * Lock/-unlock luminaires guidelines and objects

          * Staircase Configurator

          * Auto luminaire suspension kit object (these should be adjustable)

          * Video walkthrough and time-lapse

          * Sketch-up model import (you can't import skp*files)

Overall, the new updates are here to speed up our work and produce the lighting calculations in more accurate and efficient way. Whilst we can now work with image files and hand-sketch notes, we can't process the PDF files yet. If you looking to speed-up our response time on lighting design, DWG drawing are still the fastest way forward.

The new update allows us to run quick reports on luminaire and light output to aid the product specification.
