The ongoing data centre project in Amsterdam is a testimony to our team's technical capability. The Amsterdam site is yet another successfully completed project in the string of data centre projects for the leading data centre provider.
Although the Amsterdam site doesn't have its own individual sustainability rating, the Gold Level Eco Vadis rating applies to the company as whole and boast high sustainability credentials.
Designed by Hyphen Architects and brought to life by Kirby Group, the site in Amsterdam consists of two new 27MW buildings.

Working closely with the consultant and contractor, our lighting engineers delivered custom, mission-critical lighting solutions, while meeting all essential criteria for this type of project.
Over 200 hours of lighting design, including very detailed emergency lighting design, were allocated to secure and support this complex project.

THE DESIGN BRIEF.
A standout feature of the Amsterdam data centre is the Gordon Grid ceiling - a widely used solution in mission critical environments due to its flexibility and ability to support direct suspension of cables and equipment. To ensure compatibility with this ceiling system, we were tasked with designing and manufacturing an entirely new light fitting tailored to meet the specific demands of the project.
Custom Lighting
Following the design brief, we designed a luminaire that met the client's criteria and and works with the Gordon Grid. Working samples have been supplied to the design team and our engineers also attended the site in Amsterdam. After
The custom fitting was used across data halls, corridors and crah gallery ( computer room air handling gallery).
Lighting Calculations
Designing and manufacturing a completely new light fitting aside, this project was heavily focused around lighting design and calculations- as a mission critical building the lighting design requires every detail like the horizontal and vertical calculation with a strong emphasis on UGR levels.
Data centres require high output light fittings delivering 500 lux on working plain, but also with UGR rating less than19. These fittings also need to be temperature tested, as they have to be able to withstand high extreme temperatures on both sides of the spectrum.

We asked our Project Director, Elman Lewis: What was the most challenging aspect of the project?
“It was definitely the lighting design and the very precise calculations. Understandably, the functionality and reliability are of top importance with this type of work
I would say mission critical projects are more challenging than our usual large scale CAT A fit out projects ."
All custom lighting was manufactured in the UK in the 8-10 weeks lead time and tested for extreme temperatures. It was supplied in 4000K colour temperature. The fittings are non dimmable, but are equipped wit PIR sensors, that would turn on the light in the aisles when people walk in.
All lighting was delivered on time over several stages for a successful completion in the Q4 of 2024. The final result is a highly functional scheme designed with sustainability and reliability in mind. We are very proud to have been part this fantastic development.
